Memorial Service for Lister

Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company’s Rescue 84 bears the casket of Daniel Lister on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018.

CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners approved a letter July 23 to the Maryland Department of Transportation in support of the honorary dedication of a section of Maryland Route 404 to the late Daniel Lister.

Lister, assistant chief of Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company, suffered a heart attack and died Sept. 1, 2018, while assisting at the scene of a crash on Route 404.

At the time of his death, Lister held the positions of risk manager for Queen Anne’s County Department of Human Resources and assistant chief for Queen Anne–Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company, where he had been a member for 15 years, holding every position within the company except president.

A petition requesting the honor was submitted to Maryland State Highway Administration shortly after Lister’s passing, QA-Hillsboro VFC President Phil Starkey said.

This summer the fire company learned they needed to get the endorsement of local government officials. The towns of Queen Anne and Hillsboro have already given their support, and the letter from Queen Anne’s County Commissioners was the last one needed, Starkey said.

They hope to dedicate a one-mile portion of the highway in the vicinity of the crash scene, between Norwich Creek bridge and the intersection at Route 309, in Lister’s name.

Starkey said he had hoped to hold the dedication on the anniversary of Lister’s death, but the state wasn’t open to that idea because it’s Labor Day weekend. He is waiting to hear back from the governor’s office about a date, probably sometime in mid-October.
