Pinehurst, NC — Mary Ellen Wright Lawson, 97, of Pinehurst, NC, died on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Brookdale Senior Living. Mary Ellen was born on Jan. 30, 1921 in Denton, Md. She was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Bertha (Stewart) Wright.
On Oct. 5, 1946, Mary Ellen married John Lawson at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. They were very devoted to one another during their 64 years of marriage before Mr. Lawson deceased in June of 2010. The Lawsons settled in Scotch Plains, NJ. It was there Mrs. Lawson was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served the community in a variety of volunteer roles, including the board of directors of the Union County Psychiatric Clinic. As a Daughter of the American Revolution and a member of Questors, she appreciated our country’s history and loved antiques. She created a very beautiful home with her talents in sewing, decorating, and furniture refinishing. Mary Ellen was a strong leader yet very sensitive towards others. She and her beloved John created a home of warm affection.
She power walked her way into her 90’s. A humorous peek at Mary Ellen’s enthusiasm for staying healthy and active is exemplified in her being the first to purchase a 10 speed bike in the Scotch Plains area, as well as, at 50 years old, attempting to participate in playing basketball through a local recreation league. She didn’t talk about it alot but she did say the other women were much younger than she and very serious about the game.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lawson was preceded in death by her siblings: Katherine Elizabeth Kemp, James Franklin Wright Jr., and William Alexander Stewart Wright. She is survived by her children: Beth Lawson Calvert (David), of Ona, WV; Mary-Stewart Regensburg (the late Andrew), of Pinehurst, NC; and John (Jack) Trevallion Lawson (Julie), of Richboro, PA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
The family is thankful for the care she was given at Brookdale Senior Living.
