DENTON — The Caroline County 4-H Achievement Banquet took place Friday, March 15, at the Caroline County 4-H Park.

Navonne Owen, 4-H educator for the county’s University of Maryland Extension, hosted the event for the first time and said she began her work with the organization as a youth member.

“My 4-H experiences had such a big impact on me and have now come full circle, and I am excited to be back home to provide that same experience and have that same impact on today’s youth,” Owen said.

Throughout the night, Owen introduced special guests volunteers essential to the local 4-H program, including 4-H park caretaker Jack Kelley and Jennifer Dorr, an administrative assistant at the University of Maryland Extension.

Owen held a moment of silence for Roger Banko, former Denton Elementary principal who died in January 2018. Owen said Banko was beloved throughout the Caroline County school system.

“He also was a talented and wonderful 4-H volunteer and leader with our archer club for many years. He is dearly missed by all, so let’s honor his memory,” Owen said.

Biddy Trice, owner of Trice Auctions, served as a live auctioneer during a small portion of the banquet.

Quinn Cochran, a Diamond Clover Award winner from Beside the Still Waters 4-H Club, talked about a project designed and implemented for his award. His project takes Pokemon the Trading Card Game, and helps younger students within the state practice basic math skills. His curriculum can be viewed at: www.bit.ly/PokeMind.com

“I created this curriculum in about two years and I tested this curriculum, just last summer,” Cochran said. “I found that no matter the experience or the ability or even knowledge of the game of Pokemon, that everybody would be able to have so much fun and learn so much more.”
