DENTON — Denton Police have arrested Heather Burris, 27, of Denton for second degree assault. On Nov. 23 police were called to Food Lion where staff reported observing a female, later identified as Burris, verbally and physically abusing a small child. Staff further advised Burris was yelling and cursing at the child so loudly it could be heard throughout the store.

Employees of the store observed additional behavior believed to be abusive, including Burris failing to ensure the child was in the car before moving her vehicle from the parking lot. Police determined the child was Burris’ six year old son. After attempts to interview Burris by police were unsuccessful, they applied for charges and an arrest warrant was issued.

On Dec. 2 the warrant was served on Burris without incident at her residence. She was charged with child abuse second degree, reckless endangerment, child neglect, second degree assault, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace. The District Court Commissioner ordered Burris held without bail at the initial appearance hearing.
