DENTON — The collapsing old Southern States building at the corner of Market and Gay Streets finally came down with a controlled burn executed by Denton Volunteer Fire Company and assistance from area units including Easton. A large column of smoke could be seen from several miles. The building and lot was purchased by the town with a grant and said town manager, Don Mulrine, needed to be leveled to reduce the risk of a potential hazard.

The terms of the grant will keep the property unused for the next several years. The controlled burn on Saturday, Nov. 9 also allowed for the fire department to practice live training on aerial and pumping apparatus.
