As a single mom, Lisa still believed a fairy tale romance was possible.

When she met John, they were both taking college classes, and he got a job while she worked. The old cliché was true for Lisa: He swept her off her feet.

John was attentive in endearing ways. He loved to go shopping with Lisa and her young daughter, and he always offered to drive them wherever they wanted to go. He brought them little gifts.

But eventually his attentiveness became more controlling. He began to insist they go places together without her friends. He told her she would spend all her time with him if she really loved him. They stopped going out altogether when he accused her of cheating on him. He constantly told her she was a bad mother.

Lisa eventually lost her job because of John’s controlling behavior. She lost her income and was beginning to lose her self-confidence. She was losing control of her life.

Then the physical abuse began. Lisa reached out to a local agency for help. She was able to separate from John and get a protective order, hopefully to keep her and her daughter safe.

Now Lisa finds herself starting over right before Christmas. She and her daughter would be so grateful for assistance from the Brighter Christmas Fund.
