KINGSTOWN — A single-car crash Sunday evening, Feb. 24, killed one man and critically injured another.
Maryland State Police, Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company, Queen Anne’s County Emergency Services and others responded to the crash about 6:30 p.m.
Maryland State Police said a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette, driven by Dwayne Ray Vansant, 56, of Chestertown, was traveling west on Route 544 near Hybarc Farm Lane when it veered off the right side of the road. The car came to rest in a drainage ditch off the side of the road.
First responders found two patients; both had been ejected from the car.
Vansant was taken by ambulance to Chester River Hospital in Chestertown, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
His passenger, Steven Adam Meekins, 49, of Chester Harbor was taken by Maryland State Police helicopter to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of his injuries. Meekins remained in the hospital in critical condition Wednesday night, according to Lisa Clough, director of corporate communications for University of Maryland Medical System.
According to the report, police do not know why Vansant lost control of the car.
The road was closed in both directions for about four hours for investigation by the MSP Crash Team and cleanup.
