Bomb Squad responds to Centreville home

Bomb technicians determined this mortar was inert after a Centreville man found it on his property Tuesday evening, March 10.

CENTREVILLE — The Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad responded to a house on Rolling Bridge Road at 6:13 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, after a resident found a military ordnance.

Homeowner Joseph Jewell was going through some boxes and materials that had been cleaned out of his house when he found a cardboard tube containing a mortar, said Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire, acting public information officer.

When Jewell opened the top of the tube he saw the fins, and being a former marine, recognized it as some sort of military explosive, Alkire said, so he notified the bomb squad.

The bomb squad identified the ordnance as an M52 60 mm mortar, a type dating back to World War II. They determined it was inert and removed it from the property.
