A Queen Anne’s County packing house operator has come up with an invention which is causing excitement in the oyster packing industry. The man is William H. Harris of Chester, who has been in the business for 26 years.
His invention is the oyster chipper. It’s a little machine which makes it possible for even inexperienced oyster shuckers to shuck oysters quietly, neatly, and safely. It’s important because the Maryland Oyster Industry has been suffering in the last few years from a dwindling labor supply. But the chipper is also beneficial to experienced shucker.
