Christ Church holds pre-k graduation

  • 0

STEVENSVILLE — Christ Episcopal Church Day School held its 49th graduation ceremony outdoors Wednesday evening, June 10, for 28 pre-k students, while practicing social distancing. CECDS is the original preschool on Kent Island, founded in 1971.

The students and their parents remained inside their cars in the church’s parking lot, while the Rev. Mark Delcuze addressed them using an sound system that had been set up outside. Families were encouraged to decorate their cars for the occasion, and Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department Ladder Truck 1 was parked in the lot displaying a huge American flag hanging from it for the children. School Director Lisa Oesterling credited KIVFD Assistant Fire Chief Tracy Schulz with making the arrangements to have the truck and flag there.

Oesterling said, “During the pandemic with schools closed, our teachers posted daily lessons, read stories and taught crafts using videos posted on our Facebook page, Christ Episcopal Church Day School and the CECDS YouTube channel. The teachers have missed their students and were absolutely delighted to be able to see them graduate.”

Delcuze told those gathered, “The Christ Episcopal Church Day School is an enduring part of our ministry here at Christ Church Parish Kent Island. The director and staff are dedicated professionals who fully support the school’s mission to provide a safe, loving and nurturing environment where Christian values are modeled and integrated into their developmentally appropriate curriculum. I love celebrating the monthly chapel service with the students and their parents, and take special delight in the Christmas programs and Grandparents’ Day .... Our graduates have a proven record of achieving excellence in academics and athletics as well as spiritual pursuits. It is our goal to enhance children’s self-esteem while striving to allow each child to develop to his or her fullest potential academically and spiritually in a Christian atmosphere.”

Music specialist Beth Judy, who has been with the school for over 40 years, led the children in a few of their favorite songs during the program.

Pre-kindergarten classes graduated at different times to keep those in attendance, even in the parking lot, to a safe distance.
