KI Elks Horseshoe League member Tony Gay shows top form as he released his horseshoe during the finals of the spring 2018 tournament.

STEVENSVILLE — The Kent Island Elks, Lodge 2576, 2525 Romancoke Road, Stevensville, will host the first-ever Phil Pobletts Memorial Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Pobletts was a longtime member of the KI Elks adult horseshoe league, traveling every Wednesday evening from Sykesville in Carroll County to compete with the many members of the league.

Friend Chuck Bowman said Pobletts had a deep love for the game of horseshoes.

“Phil passed away in February from liver disease after having a liver transplant done in January. Complications followed, and he didn’t make it. The horseshoe league leadership decided to sponsor a tournament in his name to honor him,” Bowman said.

Pobletts was a native Marylander who grew up in Carroll County and was a commercial tire salesman.

Cost for participating is $25 per person, luck of the draw for partners to be matched with. Registration will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Shoes fly at 10 a.m. Double elimination format.

Social distancing will be followed at all times while on the lodge grounds.

For more information or to confirm you plan to participate, call 410-310-8918.
