ANNAPOLIS — Attendees at the Dec. 12 Summit titled “Rural Maryland Rising: Investing in Resiliency, Collaboration, and Innovation” will not only have the opportunity to take a deep dive into relevant topics challenging their communities like health care, community development and economic development, but will also get a sneak peek into the next big innovation in agriculture at AgShowcase19, an event feature sponsored by the MidAtlantic Farm Credit.
The Summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Annapolis, and will include a special plenary session at 2 p.m. that will showcase four cutting-edge agricultural innovators. Registration for the Summit is $50 per attendee. Meals are included. To register, visit https://rural.maryland.gov/2019-rural-summit/.
Participants in AgShowcase19 are either based in Maryland, or are opening up new operations in the state. Each group will compete for financial support by doing a TED-styled talk about how they are changing the face of agriculture in Maryland (and around the country). The session will feature audience voting/participation to determine award amounts for the presenters based on criteria such as relevance and innovation. Featured companies are:
Terrapulse of College Park. The company provides real-time data to clients in the public and private sector using algorithms that apply expertise in geospatial intelligence, machine learning, and satellite image analysis.
Mercaris of Silver Spring. Mercaris recognized the void in resources available in market infrastructure for organic and non-GMO agriculture in the United States for producers to retailers. The company provides information on market conditions for organic and non-GMO commodities, and its trading platform allows buyers and sellers to meet on-line and trade physical commodities.
Ovipost of Cordova. Ovipost automates cricket farming, and serves the reptile market while building tools and technology to reduce costs. The firm’s mission is to help insects become an affordable, scalable, sustainable, high-protein ingredient for broad use throughout the agricultural supply chain.
MadTech Modern Agronomy of Huntingtown. This firm was last year’s AgPitch winner. MadTech uses agricultural drones to give farmers comprehensive and detailed information about their crops. The drones are equipped with normalized difference vegetation index sensors and forward looking infrared cameras to glean a wealth of information on a farmer’s land and crops.
In addition to the AgShowcase, the Summit will include a welcome by Maryland Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford, a keynote address by Paul Costello, Ph.D., executive director of the Vermont Council on Rural Development, updates from Maryland legislators as well as breakout sessions on Agriculture, Community Development, Economic Development and Health Care. Also featured will be a special lunch program with Secretary David R. Brinkley, Secretary of Budget & Management and Secretary Kelly M. Schulz, Secretary of Commerce. The Summit will close with remarks by the Honorable Peter Franchot, Comptroller of Maryland, followed by a networking reception.
