Boat fire

This is all that remained of a 34-foot boat that caught fire in Eastern Bay Thursday morning. The sole occupant was rescued without injury.

EASTERN BAY — A man operating a boat on

Eastern Bay on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 29 was forced to abandon the vessel when fire broke out aboard and was safely rescued shortly after.

Keith Berger of Chandler, Texas, had left the Miles River Yacht Club and was in Eastern Bay when the fire broke out around 9:55 a.m., said Candy Thomson, spokesman for Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Berger put on his lifejacket and went into the water and was rescued by a “good Samaritan,” according to Thomson. Berger was not hurt, she said.

The boat was described as a 34-foot Carver, Thomson said. The boat was “completely involved” when NRP, the Coast Guard, and Talbot County emergency personnel arrived on the scene, she said. The boat burned to the waterline and may have been partially sunk, according to Thomson. There was no word on the cause of the

fire.
