CUMBERLAND — Talbot posts 70/77 was eliminated from the American Legion state baseball tournament Aug. 1, losing 10-4 to eventual champion Funkstown Post 11 in the morning and 8-6 to Garrett posts 71/214 in an afternoon loss-bracket game at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.

A four-run sixth inning gave Garrett a lead it never relinquished, and two more runs in the seventh provided the margin of victory.

Talbot fell behind early in the elimination game, tied Garrett in the bottom of the second inning, then moved to a 3-1 lead with two runs in the third on Nick Newnam’s single and Ashton Echternach’s squeeze bunt.

Garrett pulled within 3-2 in the fourth and regained the lead with four runs in the sixth. Aided by an outfield error and a two-run triple, Garrett surged ahead, 6-3.

Posts 71/214 scored two unearned runs in the seventh.

Trailing 8-3 in the final inning, Talbot rallied courtesy of Newnam’s two-run single and Echternach’s RBI single before leaving the bases loaded.

Newnam went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Echternach, Trent Weems, Logan Baillif, Aubrey Perry, Eddie Robinson and Tristan Cassell each notched hits for Talbot, which outhit Garrett, 9-8.

Talbot won its opener in the state tournament July 29, 3-0, against Laurel Post 60.

Jack Vener pitched the first 2 1/3 innings to get the win.

Relievers Newnam, Echternach and Jaden Cassell (who earned the save) completed the four-hit shutout.

Collectively, the Talbot pitchers had seven strikeouts.

Eastern Shore District North Division champ Talbot took the lead early when Cassell walked with one out in the bottom of the first, stole second, and scored one out later on a Baillif base hit.

Talbot added a run in the bottom half of the third when Newnam singled to center field with one out and scored on Echternach’s fielder’s choice grounder two batters later.

A Jackson Cronan single in the sixth brought in Echternach to round out the scoring.

In the top of the seventh, Laurel threatened with a leadoff walk, followed by a base hit. Cassell got a groundout and then a strikeout, finishing the game by picking off a runner at second with a quick flip to shortstop Weems.
