Robinson-led Patriots rally in 2nd half for homecoming victory

Chestertown Christian Academy’s Bennett Robinson navigates around Calvary defenders Corwyn Moser, left, and Jay Pullman in the first half Friday. He led all players with 31 points.

CHESTERTOWN — When you have the kind of game that Bennett Robinson had Friday night, you don’t need much else. He lit up the scoreboard for 31 points in Chestertown Christian Academy’s 55-42 homecoming victory over Calvary Christian Academy.

Reyner Meikle added 12 points and his brother Graham Meikle contributed eight for the Patriots, who avenged a 48-33 loss at Calvary in Dover, Del., two weeks earlier.

In the rematch, the visiting Lions (5-6) took a 27-26 lead at halftime when Sam Malinsky beat the buzzer with a length of the court layup.

Malinsky scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the first half. He ultimately would foul out with 2 minutes, 3 seconds remaining, but by the time the Patriots had the game well in hand.

We’re not sure what CCA coach Johnathan Stoltzfus said to his team during the break, but they looked like a different group of players in the second half.

The Patriots (6-8) regained the lead for good, 29-27, on Graham Meikle’s three-point play to open the third-quarter scoring.

Calvary kept it a one-possession game for a while, the last time at 33-31, before Robinson’s 3-pointer with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter sparked an 11-2 run.

CCA closed the third quarter with eight unanswered points, extending its lead to 44-33 on a Graham Meikle fast-break layup that started with Matt Sadzinski’s outlet pass at the other end.

CCA scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game, 50-33, on a Robinson layup with 5:48 remaining.

Reyner Meikle scored eight points in the final frame to help secure the Patriots’ victory.

Calvary led throughout the opening quarter, save the 6-6 tie that was reached with a Robinson basket with 5:10 remaining.

Josiah Hensley restored the Lions’ lead, 8-6, when he drove the baseline at the 4:24 mark.

They extended the spread to 13-6 on Jay Pullman’s three-point play with 3:18 to go in the quarter.

The Patriots went ahead, 17-15, on Robinson’s three-point play with 6:39 remaining in the half. He scored seven points in a row to wipe out a 15-10 deficit.

CCA took its largest lead of the half, 23-16, on a pair of Robinson’s free throws at the 4:43 mark.

Calvary scored the next seven points to deadlock at 23 on Malinsky’s three-point play; he drew a foul while scoring a highlight-reel reverse layup.

It was back and forth after that, with CCA taking its last lead of the half at 26-25 on Robinson’s left-handed layup off the left side of the glass.

Calvary pulled ahead at the break, 27-26, on Malinsky’s buzzer-beating layup.
