Inaugural Run for Character 5K is on FallFest card

Sabina Minney of Worton raises her hands in triumph, defending her title as the first female to finish the 2018 Pirates and Wenches 5K run/walk. The race is replaced by the Run for Character, with proceeds to benefit Rock Hall Elementary School and the Character Counts! program in all of Kent County’s public schools.

ROCK HALL — A 5K run/walk to benefit Rock Hall Elementary School and the Character Counts! program in all of Kent County’s public schools will be held Saturday, Oct. 12. The inaugural Run for Character is being held in conjunction with the annual FallFest.

For the past four years, a 5K run/walk to benefit RHES and Character Counts! was held in conjunction with the Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend in Rock Hall. Peg McHugh, who led the Pirates and Wenches races, is continuing as race director for the Run for Character.

"A large number of local Rock Hall businesses are again providing sponsorship monies," McHugh wrote in an email. "The event (Pirates and Wenches race) was so successful last year that the 5K Committee was able to award $2,000 to CCKC and $500 to RHES. This year we hope to give equivalent donations to both beneficiaries as we have already surpassed last year's business commitments," she said in the email.

On Oct. 12, there will be a free "Kiddie K” for runners 10 and younger. The race will start at 8:50 a.m. at Waterman’s Crab House on East Sharp Street. All Kiddie K finishers will receive a participation ribbon.

The 5K will follow at 9 a.m. The cost is $20 if you register by Oct. 5 and $25 after that date and on race day.

You can register online at TriSportsevents.com. Registration forms are available at town hall, Kent Athletic and Wellness Center, Peoples Bank and AquaFit in Chestertown; and town hall, the Mainstay, Peoples Bank,  Haven Harbour Marina and Village Hardware and Garden Center in Rock Hall.

Awards will be presented to the overall male winner and overall female winner of the 5K, as well as the top three place-finishers (male and female) in various age groups. There also will be prizes for the top five male and female walkers.

The awards ceremony will be held at Waterman's Crab House immediately after the last participant crosses the finish line.

All 5K participants will receive a complimentary tech shirt.
