Kent County High School Athletics

SNOW HILL — Mayowa Taiwo is continuing to perform like an MVP.

The Kent County High School senior, who is the reigning team most valuable performer, ran a personal best in the indoor 55 meters last week and is two one-hundredths of a second from running in the 6s.

Jon Conner also ran a PR in the 55 meters, while Dylan Conner had his fastest 55-meter hurdles and Giuseppe Gordillo had a career-best shot put.

Dylan Conner had the highest finish for the Trojans, 11th in the hurdles.

Gordillo was Kent’s top performer in the shot put — which is a first — and surpassed 30 feet for the first time.

The indoor track and field meet at the Worcester County Recreation Center was held Thursday, Jan. 2, which also was the first day back to school for the Trojans after a long recess for the winter holiday. There were no organized practices during the nearly two-week break, which explains slower times.

Kent traveled with a total of 10 athletes, but only eight competed. Maddy Kendall and Trista Strong were entered in relay events, but Kent only had three girls.

Jordon Cox-Pemberton was the only Kent girl to complete. After she “twisted her knee funny” when throwing the shot put, which has become her signature event, she was pulled from running the 800 meters.

“We traveled very shorthanded,” coach Rich Shaw wrote in an email Jan. 3.

He added: “Our entries were due by 8 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 1) evening. I actually entered all of our athletes into events the Friday we started break (Dec. 20). Because of entering the athletes so early, and being out of the country with no internet access prior to the meet, I was unable to adjust as students informed me that they were unable to attend the meet for various reasons.”
