Golfers support women's health center in Chestertown

This year’s Pink Polar Bear golf tournament at Chester River Yacht and Country Cub drew 60 golfers, who collectively raised $2,325 to benefit those served by the Eleanor and Ethel Leh Women’s Center at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.

CHESTERTOWN — The eighth edition of the Pink Polar Bear golf tournament at Chester River Yacht and Country Club raised $2,325 to benefit the patients served in the Eleanor and Ethel Leh Women’s Center at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.

This year’s event was July 28, and attracted a field of 60 golfers — members of CRYCC and their guests.

Gwinn Derricott and Jane Hukill returned as tournament chairmen. They also are volunteers at the Chestertown hospital.

The tournament traditionally is held on the last Sunday in July. Many of the volunteers were the 9-hole and 18-hole ladies who play at Chester River. They also contributed to the prize offerings.

While the tournament originally was for ladies only, men have been welcome as long as they come dressed in pink.

“We call it the Pink Polar Bear tournament because early on, it was explained to us that finding breast cancer can be like trying to find a polar bear in a blizzard. When we saw the capabilities of tomosynthesis in mammography, we had to do our part to support the continued availability of this state-of-the-art technology in Chestertown,” said Hukill, who also is a member of the Chester River Health Foundation board.

“The support of the Chester River Health Foundation, the club’s members — many of whom have returned each year to participate in this popular tournament — and the very helpful support of golf pro Scott Stokes continue to make this one of our strongest support efforts for the Leh Women’s Center,” Hukill said in a news release.
