SUDLERSVILLE — Maryland State Police responded to a call for a hit and run motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Maryland Route 313 and Coleman Road at 12:43 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.

Upon arrival, Tfc. Gabriella Gagliardi determined a red Ford Ranger, driven by Nathan Short, 18, of Millington, had been involved in a low-speed collision with a yellow Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Kevin Vagelo, 33, of Wharton, N.J., police reported.

Another man, Brian McDermott, also of New Jersey, was driving an additional truck, police said. After the crash, McDermott got out of his truck and made contact with Short, Gagliardi reported.

Short fled the scene in the Ranger, dragging McDermott down the road, police said.

McDermott was taken to University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. By Tuesday afternoon, the hospital nursing supervisor said he was not listed as a patient.

Short was located, arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
