Coaches approved for winter sports, orientation is Nov. 11 at KCHS

Sobaye Scott Sr., a 1995 Kent County High School graduate, returns for the 10th year as head boys basketball coach at his alma mater. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trojans did not have a season in 2020-21.

WORTON — By unanimous vote, the Board of Education at its Oct. 11 regularly scheduled monthly meeting and Oct. 25 work session approved a slate of coaches for 2021-22 winter sports at Kent County High School.

The only head coaching position that has not been filled is for indoor track, according to Athletic Director Kevin Taylor. This is a paid position. If interested, contact Taylor at ktaylor@kent.k12.md.us or 410-778-1394.

Orientation — for new and returning athletes and their parents — is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 in the high school auditorium. Mask wearing is mandatory while inside the building.

The first day of practice, as allowed by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, is Nov. 15.

Orientation is an ideal time to meet the coaches, and to find out about their training requirements, practice schedules and expectations for the season.

Athletes are reminded that they cannot practice or participate until they have a completed physical on file at school. One physical is good for the entire academic year.

The approved coaching positions are listed here.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Sobaye Scott, head varsity coach; James “Buck” Kennard, assistant varsity coach; Dominic Harris, head junior varsity coach; and volunteer assistant junior varsity coaches Michelle Phillips and Rockeem Harris.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Dawn Wright, assistant coach.

CHEERLEADING: Elizabeth Rinehart, head coach.

SWIMMING: Grayson Wise, head coach; and Renee Bench, assistant coach.

WRESTLING: Chris Yiannakis, head coach; and volunteer assistant coaches Matt Jones, Michael Mench, Richard Bacastow, Donnie Yerkie and Jared Brown.
