NORFOLK, Va. — Washington wrapped up its 26th season as a varsity sailing program with an appearance in the America Trophy regatta, which is the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s open dinghy championship.
The top 18 teams in the MAISA regular-season standings qualified for the America Trophy. Old Dominion University hosted April 29-30.
Washington (122-180-302) placed 15th.
In the A Division, the Shore sailors sent out senior Stewart Gurnell as skipper with junior Kennedy Jones (races 1-2), freshman Rachel Morgen (races 3-8) and senior Andrew Tran (races 9-12) as crew. The best finish was Gurnell and Tran as the runner-up in the 11th race.
In the B Division, sophomore Joseph Bonacci (races 1-3) and Jones (races 4-12) were the skippers, with senior Emma Macturk (races 1-8 and 11-12) and senior Jon Kelly (9-10) as crew.
St. Mary’s (55-60-115) led the fleet. SUNY Maritime (69-62-131) placed second. Then came Navy (84-60-145), Georgetown (73-72-145) and George Washington (95-60-155) to round out the top five.
Navy was the two-time defending winner.
On the first day, it was a waiting game for the breeze to fill in and stabilize enough to get races in. Seven in each division were completed by sunset.
A good breeze from the southeast filled in the next morning, 8 to 12 knots. With a very shifty direction for ODU, the race committee tried to set in the middle of the shift and conduct races. Five races in each division were completed before weather forced the fleet from the water. It was decided that the storm was going to continue past the cutoff time, and so racing was suspended.
As the winner and runner-up, St. Mary’s and SUNY Maritime earned the conference’s automatic qualifier berths to the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Fleet Race National Championships at King’s Point (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy), May 30-June 2.
