CHESTERTOWN — In recognization of its outstanding community outreach, the men’s basketball team three-peats as recipient of the Washington College Competitors Challenge Award.
The award is presented annually to the team that, in the opinion of the athletic department, “has provided passion and purpose to a philanthropic organization through its commitment of support, time and actions.”
In 2019-20, the Shoremen volunteered at the Maryland Special Olympics championship kayak race, the Chestertown Jazz Festival, the Maryland Ironman Triathlon and Character Counts! Lunch Buddies program at H.H. Garnet Elementary School in Chestertown.
A new initiative for the basketball team this year was volunteering over the winter break with Martha’s Table, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit tasked with increasing access to high-quality education, healthy food and family and community supports to underserved populations.
“It was a great experience,” head coach Aaron Goodman said in a news release. “We helped bag and distribute healthy produce and food to needy families at an elementary school in Southeast Washington. We also cooked food, spoke about the importance of fruits, vegetables and healthy foods, and spent time with the kids and their parents.”
