To the editor: Well folks Jim Crow is back and he is alive and vibrant in the great state of Georgia. And, he is also planning visits to other Republican-controlled states.
Why is this happening you may ask?
The answer is simple — Americans are voting. Specifically, black, brown and young voters are showing up at the polls.
Over 60% of eligible voters voted in the 2020 election. The plurality determined the outcome of our government in 2020.
This is the definition of a democracy and is something to not only be proud of but to continue to encourage.
But the Republican Party, instead of expanding its voter outreach, choses to restrict voter access under the spurious accusations of widespread voter fraud, which, to remind you, even then Attorney General William Barr disclaimed on Dec. 1 following Donald Trump’s loss.
In addition, when other co-conspirators of voter fraud — Mr. Trump’s lawyer Sidney Powell comes to mind — are confronted with legal action they are now claiming that reasonable people should not have believed them to begin with.
And, what we observed happening in real time on Jan. 6 was really just peaceful support for American democracy, certainly not the predictable outcome from lies about a “stolen election.”
To keep a democracy, you have to vote.
When individuals attempt to stop you from voting they do so because they fear you. They fear losing power.
If you want equality, if you want to prove these words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (women, sexual orientation) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” are truly meaningful for all, vote.
