To the editor: ”Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men could not put Humpty together again.”
This well-known children’s rhyme expresses how Donald Trump’s great fall to broken and shameful pieces was supported by congressional Republicans who failed in their attempt to put Trump back in office again. Also, millions of Trump voters who sided with lies and subversive actions to tear down democracy also failed to give Trump a second chance.
Trump’s actions to support the attack on the United States Capitol was a shameful anti-democratic demonstration.
Congressman Andy Harris, representing the Eastern Shore, voted to overturn the Electoral College along with over 120 Republicans after the Capitol was attacked leaving five people dead and injuring countless others. Why would Dr. Harris, as a medical doctor, vote to support insurrection, destruction and death at the Capitol?
Dr. Harris took the Hippocratic Oath, one of the oldest documents in history written by Hippocrates, whereby physicians swear “to treat the ill to the best of one’s ability.” It is an ethical and moral statement that values human life and dignity.
Dr. Harris also took an oath to defend and protect the United States Constitution, which also values human life and dignity.
Nevertheless, an oath taken means nothing if it is not honored and followed.
Jan. 6, 2021, the date of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, will go down in history along with such terrible dates as Dec. 7, 1941 (the attack on Pearl Harbor) and Sept. 11, 2001 (the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center).
Republicans who supported Trump’s failed attempt to overturn the presidential election, including Dr. Harris, will also go down in history as dishonorable legislators who put personal ambition, ego, power, lies, conspiracy theories and white supremacy over moral responsibility.
Dr. Harris should resign immediately and be replaced by a representative for the Eastern Shore of Maryland, whether a Democrat or Republican, with character and honor, to uphold and protect democracy against those willing to destroy it.
