To the editor: I grew up idolizing sports heroes John Unitas and Willie Mays, but my real hero was right here in Chestertown — Harold Wood Joiner, who passed away in December 2021 at the age 101.

You would never know that he flew a B-25 during WW2. Mr. Joiner never said much about the war.

I was a good friend of his late son Gill. I remember going to the Joiner home, sometimes spending the night. If it was a Saturday night, you always got up Sunday morning to go to Sunday school. Sometimes Mr. Joiner would take us to the airstrip (where KRM is currently located) on a Sunday afternoon, taking us up in a two-seater plane. You always felt safe flying with him. He made it look so easy.

After Mr. Joiner retired, sometimes you would drive down High Street going past Christ Methodist Church and see him cutting grass or other maintenance at the church.

I think people in Kent County should give a big right-hand salute to Harold Jointer, one of the finest people around.
