Planet watching really heats up this month with Saturn, Jupiter and Mars being October’s major attractions. The Orionid meteor shower also occurs in October under good seeing conditions.

Saturn is visible at nightfall all month and remains visible in the southern sky until around 2 a.m. It lies within the dim stars of zodiac constellation Capricornus and is the brightest object there — except on Oct. 5 when the gibbous moon passes just below the ringed planet.
