WORTON — Kent County High School Principal Dale Kevin Brown is currently on leave.
The news was announced in letter Friday, Feb. 19 from Kent County Public Schools Superintendent Karen Couch.
“Assistant Principals Mark Buckel and Shafta Anani will continue to provide support to KCHS students and families, including supervision of normal day-to-day operations,” the letter to the KCHS community states.
According to the letter, KCPS Supervisor for Student Services and Secondary Education Tracey Williams, herself a former principal of the high school, and Supervisor for Transportation and Operations Joe Wheeler, a former assistant principal at the school, also “will provide building oversight.”
“These actions are being taken to ensure that KCHS is well supported during Principal Brown’s absence,” the one-paragraph letter states.
Couch said in an email Monday, Feb. 22 that she could provide no additional comment on Brown’s leave.
Such personnel matters are generally kept private.
Kent County Board of Education members discuss personnel issues in closed-door executive sessions as allowed under the Maryland Open Meetings Act at each of their monthly meetings. They vote on recommendations in public. A personnel report is then attached to the online agenda.
Brown’s leave is not listed on the personnel reports for January or February.
Currently in his second year at KCHS, Brown was initially hired as interim principal for the 2019-20 school year following the departure of Nick Keckley.
Brown had retired as a middle school principal from Caroline County Public Schools in 2011 after 35 years with the school system. He then went to a school in Delaware.
