ROCK HALL — While their terms will not officially start until next year, Joe Goetz and Francoise Sullivan are scheduled to by sworn in to the Kent County Board of Education next week.
According to a news release from Kent County Public Schools, the ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, prior to that evening’s board meeting. Clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County Sherise Kennard will conduct the ceremony at the KCPS central office in Rock Hall.
While the ceremony will be closed to the public, it will be livestreamed via the KCPS Facebook page.
Goetz and Sullivan were the only candidates that ran for the two seats on the five-person board in this year’s election.
Goetz was up for re-election for a second term, while longtime board member Bryan Williams did not seek re-election. Sullivan made an unsuccessful bid for school board in 2018.
With results certified by the state earlier this month, Goetz, the board’s current president, received 7,125 votes — 52.6% — in the Nov. 3 General Election. Sullivan garnered 6,238 votes, 46.1% of ballots cast in the race. There were 171 write-in votes.
Goetz and Sullivan’s terms, each four years, will be effective Jan. 1, according to the KCPS news release.
The Dec. 14 board meeting will be the last for Williams. He has served 14 years on the board, having been first elected in 2006 when the terms were six years. He was subsequently re-elected to two four-year terms.
At the Nov. 9 board meeting, Goetz thanked Williams for his years of service to the students, the county and the superintendents he worked with as a board member.
“Fourteen (years) is pretty incredible, pretty amazing,” Goetz said.
He also congratulated Sullivan for being elected to the board.
The Dec. 14 board meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Board members will then go into closed session. They will return to open session at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting will be livestreamed.
Public comments may be emailed before or during the meeting to Gail Manley, executive assistant to the superintendent, at email@example.com. They will be read aloud during the meeting.
