Speedy is a dog in need of a good home. For more information, visit the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County’s website

At 11 years old, one would think a name like Speedy would no longer fit this rat terrier. But they would be mistaken!

Speedy loves zooming around the big yard at the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County, especially when there are tennis balls to chase.

Speedy came to the shelter by way of a partner agency in Louisiana.

According to them, he was surrendered after his owner passed away. In their shelter he was timid, very reserved and looking for his owner.

But it seems the Eastern Shore air agrees with Speedy, as he has shown to be a completely different dog here. He greets every new friend with the fastest whole-body wag you can imagine.

Speedy’s enthusiasm extends toward other dogs as well. His forever home could definitely include another canine companion, and he wouldn’t be opposed to felines either, so long as they don’t mind being on the receiving end of a few kisses.

While his age hasn’t deterred his movements, Speedy is blind in his left eye due to a cataract.

Also, the shelter staff initially believed he was too old to receive a neuter surgery, however, our vet has determined he will do just fine. The staff is in the process of getting him scheduled. This should help move things along during his walks, as marking every tree has become a hobby of his.

This old dog still has some tricks. To see them for yourself, submit an application at

Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County is open by appointment only. Once your application is approved, the staff will set up an appointment with you.
