CHESTERTOWN — The Dixon Group and the YMCA of the Chesapeake have announced that the YMCA is coming to Chestertown.
According to a news release, the new Kent County Family YMCA will take over operations of the Kent Athletic and Wellness Center beginning Jan. 1.
Dixon believes the YMCA is better equipped to support the needs to the community and is proud of the partnership with the YMCA that made this happen, the release states.
The YMCA has run summer camps at nearby Kent School the past three summers. With a YMCA in Chestertown, the organization looks to offer a full complement of programs and services.
“We’re excited to be given the opportunity by The Dixon Group to serve Kent County and look forward to expanding programs, member services, and partnering with others to strengthen our community,” said Robbie Gill, CEO of YMCA of the Chesapeake.
There are plans for a full facility YMCA on the corner on Haacke Drive and Scheeler Road in the near future. The new Kent County Family YMCA will provide new and expanded amenities to meet key community needs within Kent County and create a community hub where are all welcome, the release states.
A YMCA has long been sought for Kent County. Having a YMCA here was the subject of a brief editorial 100 years ago in the Kent News.
“One of the attractive places in the cities and large towns of this country are the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. buildings. In small towns the resources of the community seem to preclude such institution. But there is great need in a town the size of Chestertown for a Community House. To our mind this is the one great need of this community today,” the News wrote in the March 1, 1919 issue.
