WESTMINSTER — McDaniel College student Denis Grande of Chestertown performs in the Student African Drum Ensemble on at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, takes place in Naganna Forum, Roj Student Center at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster.

Grande is majoring in business administration.

The Student African Drum Ensemble is under the direction of McDaniel music department faculty Pape Demba “Paco” Samb, a “Senegalese Griot,” or West African historian, storyteller, singer, poet, dancer or musician.

Samb grew up in Senegal, learning to play the drums, and came to the United States in 2013. Samb originally came to the country to perform with his band and once he arrived here, he decided to stay.

The first ensemble will be performing the pieces “Kuku” and “Macaru.” The second ensemble will be performing the pieces “Mengani” and “Lambaa.”
