CHESTERTOWN — The driver in a single-vehicle crash Monday morning died at the scene, according to police.
He was identified as Melvin Leon Brandford III, 50, of Chestertown.
Lt. Stuart Lodge said the Kent County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched at 7:18 a.m. to Annie Crow Road for a report of a car that had crashed into a tree. The driver, subsequently identified as Brandford, was the only occupant of the car, a 2019 Kia, according to Lt. Lodge.
According to the preliminary investigation of the June 21 crash, Brandford failed to negotiate a curve on northbound Annie Crow Road. For reasons that have not been determined, Brandford’s car traveled off the left side of the road and into a tree.
The Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company extricated Brandford from the car.
In addition to the fire company, the Kent-Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS and Kent County Department of Public Works’ Road Division responded.
Annie Crow Road was closed to traffic until 12:30 p.m.
Lt. Lodge said the sheriff’s office has turned over the investigation to a Maryland State Police CRASH Team.
