CHESTERTOWN — The holiday season is right around the corner, and if you listen closely you might just be able to hear the sounds of sleigh bells.
There will be celebrations around the county in the coming weeks, with opportunities to talk to Santa, tree lightings and carriage rides among them.
Christmas is coming early in Chestertown with the annual Kent County Holiday Parade Friday, Nov. 25. The holiday parade, typically held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, will include marching bands, classic automobiles, floats and familiar characters like Rudolph, Olaf, the Grinch and Santa himself presiding.
The parade will run down High Street beginning 5:30 p.m. Participation in the parade is open to everyone and cash prizes will be awarded to entrants in each category.
Santa will arrive by fire truck at the end of the parade and visit with children in his house in Fountain Park until 8 p.m.
Santa will be back in Chestertown Saturday, Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In Rock Hall, the fourth annual Home for the Holidays event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at the bulkhead. Horse drawn carriage rides will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Other activities will include face painting, cookie decorating, letters to Santa, holiday shopping and more. The event is free and open to the public.
Dickens of a Christmas returns to Chestertown Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3. The festival, inspired by Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol, will include live music, carriage rides, Victorian food and drink, costumed characters and more on in the downtown historic district.
Also Dec. 3 is the Christmas bazaar and kids party time with Santa at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Rock Hall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At 5 p.m. Dec. 3, Santa will arrive by boat at the bulkhead in Rock Hall then make his way up to Main Street to light the crab basket trees. Crab baskets will be collected until Nov. 20 for display.
The annual Betterton train show will be displayed 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 Third Avenue, Betterton. Admission to the show is free.
Santa’s workshop will be open 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the Kent County Community Center in Worton. Children and families can enjoy crafts, games, stocking decorating, wreath making, meet with Santa and more.
The Town of Galena will host its Christmas tree lighting 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the town hall.
