CAMBRIDGE — (VOGEL) Marilyn V. Benton, 87, died on February 23, 2021, at her home, Wilson’s Way Assisted Living in Cambridge. She was born in Tacoma, WA, on August 4, 1933. Her parents were Philip and Margaret Vogel. She is survived by sisters Margaret Sides, Houston TX; Merry (George) Valdez, Richland, WA; and Lucy Sanders, Bonney Lake, WA.
Marilyn attended public schools in Washington state and Salisbury University, Salisbury, MD. She graduated with a B.A. degree in English from Messiah University, Mechanicsburg, PA She was a gifted artist and carpenter, a member of Wednesday Morning Artists, Cambridge, worked as a graphic artist in New York City, and a ship’s carpenter in Annapolis and Cambridge. Marilyn assisted Jim Richardson in boat restoration, was a private tutor for Dorchester schools. and illustrated a children’s books. She spent a year volunteering at a home for children in Guatemala. She is known for her carpentry skills in the restoration of the Spocott Windmill.
Marilyn’s Christian faith was of first importance to her. Over the years, she was active in Sunnyside Alliance church, Secretary, MD; Immanuel Lutheran, Easton; and Redeemer Church, Cambridge. She was a loyal friend who enjoyed sharing flowers and fruit from her garden. Other hobbies included sailing, bicycling, reading and writing.
Marilyn is now united with the Lord whom she loved. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts to honor Marilyn’s life may be sent to the Overflow Café, 400 Muir Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
