Kalmar Nyckel

The Kalmar Nyckel will offer sails from Cambridge, Friday through Sunday, June 14 to 16.

CAMBRIDGE — Like a wind-born messenger announcing the Swedish Midsummer, Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware, will arrive in Cambridge to offer sails on Friday through Sunday, June 14 to 16, from Long Wharf at the Cambridge Yacht Basin, Two Yacht Club Drive.

Climb aboard for a hands-on experience at the intersection of adventure and education, hauling lines, singing chanteys or simply enjoying the sail. Discover the story behind this full-scale replica of the armed merchant ship that founded New Sweden (now Delaware) in 1638.

Start your weekend early with a 2½ hour afternoon or evening sail from 1 to 3:30 p.m. or 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday sails will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday sails are planned at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Picnics and beverages are welcome (no glass containers except wine bottles permitted). Check times and buy tickets online at www.KalmarNyckel.org/BookASail.asp or call the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation office at 302-429-7447. Sailing tickets are $60 for adults and $40 for youth under age 17.

For the more adventurous, Kalmar Nyckel offers a Pirate Sail from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for salty fun with a crew of pirates and colonial sailors. Pirate tales and scavenger hunts are part of the fun. Costumes are welcome for guests. Kalmar Nyckel never was a pirate vessel, but the crew loves to play the part for these events.

Kalmar Nyckel is an authentic seagoing recreation of a 17th-century Dutch-built armed merchant ship.

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization with the mission of preserving and promoting the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware and the Delaware Valley for the education and enrichment of all. The foundation is a volunteer-based organization that built, owns and operates the Kalmar Nyckel.
