CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester Santa Toy Drive is underway as the Christmas season draws near. Organizers raised $3,317 at a recent fundraiser at Blue Ruin in downtown Cambridge.
Toy drive organizer and local business owner Jason Warfield said he was inspired to get involved with the mission of helping all members of the community receive gifts after he came to understand that many families in the community are unable to purchase gifts for the kids in their households.
“A lot of families don’t get to experience what we experience,” said Warfield, who works to instill that understanding in his own children. “I wanted to teach the value of giving to my kids—they look forward to going and helping with shopping every year.”
“There’s a lot desperation out there,” Warfield said. He and other drive participants want the recipients of the toys and their families to realize, “We are pulling for you and for you to have a good Christmas.”
Any families in need are asked to contact the Salvation Army in Cambridge to get registered. The toy drive program also assists the Rescue Fire Company Angels, and all donations go to families in Dorchester County. Anyone interested in getting involved or making a charitable donation to help spread joy this holiday season please contact Jason Warfield at Mid Shore Graphics or by calling 443-521-3389, Michael Wheatley of the Dorchester County Young Professionals, or the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce.
The Santa Toy Drive team plans on two more fundraising events and welcomes outside support and contributions.
“There’s no judging” said Warfield of the families that receive toys. “We just want them to find hope.”
