CAMBRIDGE — Both Ironman triathlon races scheduled for 2020 have been canceled, according to a statement by race director Angie Hengst on Wednesday, July 29.
The Ironman 70.3 Eagleman and Ironman Maryland had been scheduled to be run concurrently on September 19 after the spring race was postponed due to concerns about COVID-19.
“With the health and safety of our community being an utmost priority, and based on the direction and recommendations of public health agencies and local authorities in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Select Blinds Ironman Maryland triathlon ... cannot take place in 2020,” said Hengst.
Hengst said race organizers are trying to finalize a 2021 race date and will communicate updates as they become available. Athletes that are registered for the race will receive an email with further details.
“In what has been a continually evolving and challenging time globally, we thank our athletes for their commitment and look forward to providing them with an exceptional race experience in the future,” said Hengst. “While this is disappointing, it is the right decision and in the best interest of our community and athletes.”
Organizers hope the races will return next year.
