KENT NARROWS — On Saturday, Oct. 5, Here’s to Heroes Jammin’ Fun Fest will be held at Red Eye’s Dock Bar in Grasonville, to raise funds for Truckin4Troops.
Truckin4Troops, a non-profit 501c3 organization, is dedicated to supporting and serving our wounded servicemen and women. Truckin4Troops provides wounded military and their family’s opportunities to forget about their hospital stays and enjoy time relaxing with loved ones and community members.
“Truckin4Troops and its events helped me get out of the hospital. When you are injured and going through rehab it is sometimes hard to picture yourself getting out and doing normal things. Truckin4Troops helped me see life after the hospital was possible,” said Monte Bernardo, a wounded veteran.
In keeping with Truckin4Troops mission, the Oct. 5 Jammin’ Fun Fest event is action packed with family activities.
“We hope Jammin’ Fun Fest will reinforce we care and appreciate the sacrifices our troops have made and continue to make for us and for our country,” said Bridgette Lundfelt of Chester, the event organizer.
Jammin’ Fun Fest and Truckin4Troops has invited military personnel who are currently undergoing medical treatment at Walter Reed hospital to attend along with their families and care providers.
“The rehabilitation process can be a long road for the service personnel, their families and care providers. It is our desire to show them an afternoon free of the concerns and challenges they face and one that reminds them that their sacrifices are not in vein,” said Wheeler Baker, owner of Chester business Baker’s Liquors, which is one of many Kent Island and surrounding area businesses that have contributed to making Jammin’ Fun Fest possible. “This will be special night to honor these wounded heroes along with all our service members.”
Jammin’ Fun Fest starts at 3 p.m. and runs until 11 p.m. with family-oriented activities all taking place before 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Kids 10 and under are admitted free with an adult. Proceeds from the event will benefit Trucking4Troops. Family activities include martial arts demonstrations (including board breaking), face painting, Rita’s Italian Ice, big trucks and race cars, 50/50 raffles, money wheel, a silent auction, a craft table to write letters to the wounded and deployed and much more.
At 4 p.m., Ashley Forrest, who just released her debut album “Seven Hundred Miles,” will give an all age’s concert. Forrest has been named as an “Artist to Watch in 2013” by the Country Music Association and her single “Pourin’ Over Me” is moving up the music charts. Following Forrest’s concert, the first portion of the day’s activities will be capped with a special tribute to the troops at 5:30 p.m.
Then at 6:30 p.m., it’s time to put the kids to bed and jam out with Jacked Up, who will be bringing their very own style of classic and southern rock to the dock, followed by local favorites Sleep Thru Sunday, who will be jamming the night away covering favorite modern and classic rock tunes.
“This is such a special day which will be fun for all and at the same time help those who serve us tirelessly. We are very appreciative to all who can come to Jammin’ Fun Fest and to the many local business who have helped make this possible,” said Scott Mallary of Truckin4Troops.
