STEVENSVILLE – Two lanes of the three-lane span of the Bay Bridge were closed briefly Wednesday morning when a worker had a medical emergency.
“Just after 10 a.m., a contractor working in the understructure of the bridge experienced a medical emergency and needed EMS,” said Sgt. Jonathan Green of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department and Queen Anne’s County Emergency Medical Services responded.
One lane on the bridge was closed for emergency vehicles, and a second lane was closed to provide a buffer between the emergency and passing motorists, Green said.
“Fortunately, with the assistance of the people that were there, he (the contractor) was able to walk up to the roadway,” Green said.
Once on the bridge deck, county paramedics rendered aid, then he was taken by KIVFD ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis for treatment, Green said.
Both lanes reopened after about 30 minutes.
