CHESTERTOWN - Two scholarship programs are open to local youth with an interest in agriculture.

The Maryland Holstein Scholarship Committee and the Delmarva Poultry Industry have announced that applications are open for scholarships they are sponsoring for 2013.

The Maryland Holstein Scholarship is open to Maryland youth currently enrolled or who have been enrolled in a dairy project with Holstein cattle. Scholarships are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants may be attending a two- or four-year degree-granting institution in a college of agriculture, or a four-year program in a non-agriculture field of study.

Applications may be obtained by calling Arthur and Peggy Johnson, committee chairs, at 301-972-8274, or they can be found on the University of Maryland website under “Dairy.” Applications must be typed in the space allotted, using a 12-point font. All applications also must include an official academic transcript and a recent wallet-size photo (head shot only). Applications for the Maryland Holstein scholarship must be postmarked by Jan. 15, 2013.

Scholarships will be presented at the Maryland Holstein Convention in Carroll County in March.

Delmarva Poultry scholarships, in the amount of $1,500, are available to students who are Delmarva residents, and are in good standing at any accredited, degree-granting institution within the U.S. or, in the case of high school applicants, who have been accepted to such an institution. Applicants must have an academic major in an area relevant to the poultry industry and must be planning a career in a segment of the Delmarva poultry industry.

Graduate students also must meet the above criteria, and be engaged in research that directly benefits Delmarva's poultry industry.

Academic transcripts should accompany all applications. Previous recipients may reapply as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

Applicants with a family member or a family business involved in the Delmarva Poultry Industry will be awarded extra points in the decision process. However, no connection to the industry is required.

For application forms and further information, phone the Delmarva Poultry Industry offices at 800-878-2449 or go online at www.dpichicken.org. Click on “College Scholarships” in the menu.

Applications must be completed and received by April 1 at DPI College Scholarship Program, 16686 County Seat Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947-4881.
