ANNAPOLIS — Daniel Firehawk Abbott recently received a proclamation from Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot at the comptroller’s office in Annapolis. The proclamation recognizes the work Abbott has been doing with the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA), the Dorchester-based nonprofit that’s restoring Handsell, a historic home near Vienna.
Abbott, an NHPA trustee, is overseeing construction of a Native American lodge on the property. Thanks to the efforts of Abbott and a crew of NHPA volunteers, the lodge is nearly finished.
Abbott will speak about building the lodge and other aspects of Native culture at NHPA’s Third Annual Nanticoke River Jamboree, which is scheduled Oct. 5 at the Handsell historic site on Indiantown Road.
