Local newspapers collect honors at regional press association luncheon

BALTIMORE — The editorial staff of American Consolidated Media's Chesapeake Publishing division, which includes The Times-Record, The Bay Times, The Record Observer, The Dorchester Star, The Kent County News and The Star Democrat, collectively earned 20 honors, including nine first-place awards, at the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. (MDDC) Press Association Awards Luncheon this spring.

Stories, photographs, columns, websites and videos showcased the range of journalistic talent in the region throughout 2012.

Times-Record Editor Dustin Holt received first-place honors in Division F for Best Photo Series for "Autumn is a second spring ..." and Best Photo Gallery for "Autumn Colors in the Caroline Countryside."

Holt received four additional second-place awards at the banquet. In The Times-Record's division (Division F Non-dailies with a circulation of less than 10,000) he earned second places for Best Sports Feature "NASCAR's Story Told by New England Voices"; Best Sports Story "Past NASCAR Champion Wallace Previews Dover"; and Best Photo Gallery "Hurricane Sandy Hits Caroline." In the Dorchester Star's division (Division E Non-dailies with a circulation from 10,000 to 20,000) Holt, who also is the Dorchester Star editor, received second place for Best Web Video 2nd place "World War I Memorial."

Bay Times Editor Angela Price earned first place in the Best Editorial category for "Public Deserves Answers" in Division F — Non-dailies with a circulation of less than 10,000.

Trish McGee of The Kent County News won Best of Show in the overall Best Local Column (Feature or Humor) category for "Honoring an Orioles Legend."

The Chesapeake team placed in 17 different categories for their respective divisions. Chesapeake Publishing consists of daily editions The Star Democrat and The Cecil Whig; and weekly publications The Bay Times, The Times-Record, The Record Observer, The Dorchester Star and The Kent County News, of which full teams, as well as individual contributors, received recognition for their news coverage.

In Division C — Daily newspapers with a circulation of less than 30,000, Chesapeake Publishing received four first-place honors. William Haufe, sports editor of The Star Democrat, received first place in Best Sports Feature Story for "Covering All Her Bases."

The Star Democrat editorial staff took top honors in Best Multimedia Storytelling for "Election 2012" and Best Photo Gallery for "Hurricane Sandy Hits Mid-Shore."

Josh Shannon of The Cecil Whig took top honors in Best Feature Story (Non-Profile) for "A Friend to Guide Him." The Cecil Whig editorial staff received the General Web Site Excellence award for CecilDaily.com.
